Kilometro Uno

Walter Munk Foundation For The Oceans

Kilómetro Uno is an environmental organization based in Baja California, Mexico, dedicated to ocean conservation and reducing plastic pollution. Through our partnership, Chef Works brings employees and communities together for beach cleanups and environmental education. Together, we help remove coastal litter, raise awareness of marine pollution and encourage everyday actions that protect our oceans.

The Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans advances ocean conservation through scientific research, education and community engagement. Introduced through Kilómetro Uno, our partnership connects Chef Works with opportunities to learn about marine ecosystems and support ocean stewardship. Together, we have participated in two educational experiences, including a La Jolla Shores tide-pool field trip featuring marine-life exploration and microplastics education, and Walter Munk Day, where we engaged children through ocean-themed activities and personalized Chef Works Kids aprons.

Our commitment also extends to microplastic studies of Chef Works fabrics with Dr. Dimitri Deheyn, a research scientist in the Marine Biology Research Division at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His research examines textile microfibers, their degradation and their effects on environmental health. This collaboration aims to deepen our understanding of our fabrics’ potential environmental impacts and inform future material decisions.
